As well as being able to harvest fresh for orders to ensure it isn’t left in storage before you have it laid. Not all suppliers can make these guarantees so let's look at why your turf might be yellow and what to do to bring it back to life.
Why is my Turf Yellow
Turf is a living organism, and it doesn’t enjoy being kept in the dark. From the moment it’s harvested, turf begins to lose condition. But firstly, don’t panic. You’re not alone, and this issue is more common than you might think and here’s why:
- Harvesting stress: When turf is cut, around 80% of its roots are removed.
- Reduced air and light: The grass, which is used to plenty of fresh air and sunlight, is rolled up and stacked on a pallet, limiting airflow and light exposure.
- Heat during transport: Especially on a warm day, turf rolls can heat up in transit, causing further stress to the grass.
It’s a lot for the grass to handle, and the yellowing you might see is essentially its way of saying, “Help!”
What to Do If Your Turf Looks Yellow
Yellow turf isn’t the end of the world, but it does need immediate care. Here’s how to revive it:
- Lay the Turf Immediately! Yellow turf is crying out for fresh air and sunlight. Unroll and lay it as quickly as possible. Start with the rolls from the middle of the pallet, as they are the most likely to have suffered. Remove the top layers of turf temporarily, placing them in the shade or unrolling them on spare ground. This ensures better air circulation while you lay the others.
- Water Thoroughly. Once laid, water your turf generously—even if it’s raining. The goal is to ensure the water penetrates deep into the soil beneath. Never water turf while it’s still rolled up! This can create a sauna effect, which will kill the grass. For the first two weeks, water daily to give your turf the best chance of recovery. Our specialists at Paynes Turf recommend checking out watering products like hosepipes and sprinkler systems.
