If you’ve been thinking about giving your garden a fresh new look read top tips from Essex turf grower and supplier Paynes Turf on the best way to lay a new lawn.
Ground prep
Normally during the summer months, the ground can become very hard and compacted, and therefore difficult to dig. Not so this summer! All the rain we’ve been having has meant that the soil is nice and soft, making the job of preparing the ground much easier.
Prepping the ground before laying new turf is the most important part of laying new turf – without level ground, the finished lawn could be lumpy and uneven. You can read all about how to prepare the ground here.
Our top tips for ground preparation are:
- Always finish prepping the ground before ordering your turf as new turf rolls should be laid as soon as they are delivered. We harvest your turf the day before it’s delivered to you, so you receive turf that’s about as fresh as it could possibly be.
- Apply good quality, nutrient-rich topsoil when prepping the ground to help ensure strong root development.
How to lay turf
Is it easy to lay turf yourself? We think so. That’s why we’ve compiled a free downloadable guide to help you do a great job. The guide contains everything you need to know about laying turf and includes handy do’s and don’ts to help you complete the job and get professional results. The guide also includes information on how to care for your new lawn after installation, so that you can enjoy a healthy, green lawn for many years to come.
Two of our best tips when laying turf are:
- Lay your turf as soon as it has been delivered, or at least within 24 hours of delivery. Turf is a living, breathing material and will soon begin to perish if it’s left rolled up.
- Water your newly laid turf within half an hour of installation, or as you’re laying it if the weather is dry and sunny. Turf is a plant and needs water to survive.
