Laying a new lawn can instantly transform your garden however it’s very important to care for your new lawn immediately after laying to ensure it stays looking great for many years to come. Read on for Paynes Turfs’ advice on looking after new turf.
It is vital that your new lawn is watered within half an hour of laying. If the weather is very dry it may be necessary to water the turf every day. Water the lawn either early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid loosing water from condensation. Water thoroughly, making sure the water seeps right through the turf and into the soil below. You can check this by lifting a corner of the turf and looking for water in the soil below.
Mow the grass
The second most important job in caring for your new lawn is to mow the grass. Mowing encourages the grass to grow strong and thick and helps to establish the new turf. Mow your lawn as soon as the roots are well established. You can check this by trying to lift a corner of the turf – if the turf is firmly attached to the soil then it’s time to mow the grass! Set the mower height to take off only the very top off the grass, and reduce the mower height slightly with every cut thereafter.
Always remember not to remove more than the top third off the height of the grass with each cut.
