5 tips to laying turf in summer

Are you planning on laying a new lawn this summer? Excessive heat will mean that you’ll need to make a few adjustments when laying the turf, so read tips from Essex turf supplier Paynes Turf to get the job done right, the first time.

Turf can be laid all year round, providing the ground isn’t covered in frost. That said, when laying turf during the summer months you’ll need to adapt the way you lay the turf to make sure it doesn’t dry out.

Tip 1: Order your turf after you’ve prepared the ground

Even the best-laid plans can go awry so never order your turf until you have finished preparing the ground, so it’s ready for the turf to be laid immediately after delivery.

Tip 2: Arrange for your turf to be delivered on the morning of installation

Turf rolls sitting around in excessive heat could spell disaster for your new lawn, especially if you have a large area to turf. Get your turf delivered in the morning so you can complete the job the same day.

Tip 3: Water the turf as soon as it’s delivered

We only ever harvest your turf the day before delivery, to ensure it reaches you in tip-top condition. During excessive heat and sunshine, you must water the turf rolls as soon as they’ve been delivered; this will keep them moist and the grass plants alive. Turf is a living material and needs water to survive.

Tip 4: Keep the turf moist throughout the installation period

Ensure that you keep the turf rolls nice and moist as you’re laying them. Pay particular attention to the edges of the turf rolls as they will dry out very quickly.

Tip 5: Water the turf as soon as you’ve finished laying it

Give your new lawn a really thorough soak using a hose pipe or a sprinkler. Make sure that the water seeps right through the turf and reaches the ground below, as this will help the turf to bond with the ground and allow it to establish more quickly. Check that the water has seeped through by lifting a corner of a turf roll and inspecting underneath. Continue to water the turf twice a day (preferably early morning and late evening) until the turf has established.
